Has anyone else seen this movie?
I watched "A Monster Calls" on Netflix, I believe, a few months ago. I was struck by the mature content in this seeming children's story. When I say mature, I do not mean "adult" I mean emotionally intelligent and philosophical. I watched it alone because it was not something my husband or son would enjoy- but I loved it. It hit so many truths for me.
I know why I thought about this movie today. There is so much going on around me that reminds me of quotes that I loved. My admiration for the writer, Patrick Ness, to weave his tale around to deliver such precious gems. It kind of feels like finding a kindred spirit.
Today the quote I think the most is:
“The answer is that it does not matter what you think, the monster said, because your mind will contradict itself a hundred times each day. You wanted her to go at the same time you were desperate for me to save her. Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both.”
― Patrick Ness,
― Patrick Ness,
Because we want easy answers. We will grasp and believe things that make us feel safe. We want others around us to agree with what we choose to believe will make us safe. We tend to punish those who dare to venture outside of our chose security. Those comforting lies we tell ourselves. That bad things would not happen... if
If only that was the case. If only the answers were as easy as saying a prayer, passing a new law or bubble wrapping our loved ones so they will never get hurt. Even with our best efforts there are always unintended consequences, acts of nature- and plain old unpredictable shitty things that happens.
And the funny thing is people will read this and say- "ok, you are saying I shouldn't do anything then..." When that is not anywhere near the point I wish to make.
It is only important what you do. So please do! DO! DO! DO!
Also consider you are capable of self deceit- sometimes you will do wrong.
In your pursuit of feeling safe and secure consider the answers are not as easy as you wish.
Do not automatically revert to black and white thinking and diminish others who do not align with your belief.
